Covid Antibody Testing Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is antibody testing?
This is a simple blood sample taken by sticking your finger. This test is looking for the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies in response to exposure or infection of Covid-19. Results take 15 minutes. This is for informational use only and is not intended to diagnose you with any illness or disease.

What does a positive IgG antibody test mean?
A very simplified answer is that IgG antibodies are produced by the bodies immune system in response to a previous exposure or infection. As a patient, this is considered a “GOOD” antibody to have, meaning that your body has had an immune response to Covid and has produced these helpful antibodies to protect you!

Does a positive IgG test mean I’m 100% Immune to Covid-19?
Unfortunately NO. It simply means that your body has started to produce antibodies and that you were likely exposed or sick with Covid-19 at some point in your life. Studies have not determined how long the antibodies will last (forever?) and what percentage of immunity you will have.

Do I still need to wear a mask and wash my hands?
Yes. Even with IgG antibodies protecting you, you can still become actively infected / sick with Covid-19 and other illnesses. You need to follow all Federal and State guidelines for social distancing, hand washing and wearing a mask. If you are a first responder or healthcare worker you need to continue to wear all appropriate PPE and follow your employers guidelines for protecting yourself and your patients.

Anyone who wants to know if they have produced antibodies to Covid-19.

What is the Cost and How is it Billed?
This test costs $65 and must be paid at the time of testing. Insurance will NOT be billed for the visit or test. No co-pay will be collected. This is an optional test for patient informational purposes only. Results will be supplied to the patient, they are not sent or shared with anyone else.

I’m feeling sick; should I get tested for antibodies?
No, if you are actively experiencing symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea, fatigue, body aches etc), you need to be seen by a healthcare provider. Our Shorewood location is happy to see you and test you for an current/active Covid-19 infection. If you are in distress or experiencing a medical emergency please call 911 or go to the nearest ER for treatment.
